FAMILY
COUNSELLING

A safe and respectful environment to discuss life experiences and previous or current stressors, with the help of a counsellor to:

  • Identify the problem and work together to formulate a plan
  • Improve communication
  • Resolve conflict
  • Improve relationships between family members
  • Help restore family harmony

Family counselling aims to prevent family breakdown and support cohesiveness and positive relationships by working with couples, young people & other family members.

INDIVIDUAL
COUNSELLING

Karunya offers individual counselling to address the challenges people face in their:
  • Personal life
  • Relationships
  • Parenting skills
  • Family life
  • Life experiences (current or past trauma, domestic violence, adverse childhood experiences etc.)
Individual counselling aims at providing a safe, trusting, and confidential space for individuals to have a one-on-one opportunity to discuss and explore their issues and concerns.

VICTIM SUPPORT
COUNSELLING

Our counsellor offers free victim support counselling in Malayalam or English. This is only available to eligible victims who received approval from Victim Support to receive free counselling from an Approved Counsellor if you are psychologically, emotionally and/or have been physically injured. CONFIDENTIALITY OF
INFORMATION

Counsellors at Karunya follow the Code of Ethics of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and maintain high levels of confidentiality.

The counsellor will not discuss your information or attendance details with anyone outside of Karunya unless you have given us your written permission. The exceptions are:

  • To meet the reporting obligations as a mandatory reporter in
    NSW or other Australian jurisdictions
  • The court of law subpoenas your file
  • Your counsellor and Karunya assess imminent risk, and not disclosing the information would result in danger to yourself or others

INFORMATION
STORAGE

Karunya will be maintaining electronic records of your attendance and each counselling session to meet legal requirements. Under the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (HRIPA), we are required to keep this file for seven years after the last date of contact. Or, if you were under 18 at the last date of contact, the file must be kept until you are 25 years of age. All records will be held in a secure client management system.
